HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Crews have started work on a $30 million stand-alone ER on the north side of Huntsville, a project Huntsville Hospital Health System is pitching as the biggest health care investment that side of the city has ever seen.
Leaders of the system broke ground Wednesday at 10121 Memorial Parkway NW, close to Bob Wade Lane and the Northern Bypass. The building is scheduled to be finished in December 2027 and will be open around the clock.
The site will work like a small hospital without inpatient beds. Board-certified doctors will staff it, and it will have CT and ultrasound imaging, a lab and a helipad. Patients who need to be admitted or need specialized care will be moved to a hospital, and the system expects the new location to take some of the load off existing emergency rooms, including the Level I trauma center at Huntsville Hospital.
Residents of North Huntsville, Meridianville and Hazel Green stand to gain the most. Michelle Watkins, the City Council member who represents the area, said the trip to the hospital now takes about 20 minutes. Mayor Tommy Battle said having emergency care nearby gives families peace of mind.
Robins and Morton is the general contractor, and Chapman Sisson Architects designed the building. In June the system opened a doctor’s office for primary care close to the Alabama A&M campus, and it plans to break ground on another freestanding emergency department in Hampton Cove on Nov. 4, with one more planned for Madison. HH Health employs more than 22,000 people across northern Alabama and southern Tennessee.
