HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Drivers who use three of the side gates at Redstone Arsenal will soon be able to get onto the post in Huntsville well into the evening. Beginning Monday, Nov. 2, Gates 1, 3 and 7 will handle cars going in and coming out between 5:30 a.m. and 9 p.m. on weekdays, the installation announced this week.

The change ends a split schedule that many commuters have had to plan around. Right now those three gates take cars coming and going only between 5:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. From 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. they are open to outbound traffic alone, which pushes anyone arriving in the afternoon toward other entrances.

Under the new hours, an employee, contractor or visitor heading onto the arsenal after lunch will be able to use any of the three gates until 9 at night instead of detouring to another entrance. The weekday-only schedule means the gates keep their current weekend status.

It is the latest in a series of gate adjustments at the arsenal this fall. On Oct. 5, Gate 8, near Drake Avenue and Patton Road, moved to a seven-day schedule running between 5:30 a.m. and 9 p.m. in both directions, and Gate 10 began running inbound and outbound on that same window each weekday.

Redstone Arsenal is one of the largest employers in the Huntsville area, and its gates feed directly into some of the busiest commuter roads in the city during the morning and afternoon rush. The longer two-way window at Gates 1, 3 and 7 should ease the late-day squeeze at the remaining entrances. Drivers should check posted signs at each gate as the new schedule takes effect next week.
