HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Dirt turned Wednesday on a new round-the-clock emergency site for the Cove side of Madison County as Huntsville Hospital Health System started work on a $30 million freestanding department aimed at Hampton Cove and Owens Cross Roads.

The building will rise along Highway 431. Planners say board-certified physicians will staff it with CT and ultrasound gear plus an on-site lab, giving east-side families a closer door than the downtown Level I Trauma Center when minutes matter.

Tracy Doughty, who runs Madison County operations for HH Health as an executive vice president, cast the project as matching growth with access. Mayor Tommy Battle said putting emergency care on that side of the mountain will change daily life for Cove-area households as the city keeps expanding.

Leaders broke ground Oct. 21 on a similar $30 million emergency site on the north side of town. Together the two projects top $60 million, and the health system expects both freestanding rooms to open toward the end of 2027.

City Councilman David Little, who represents District 2, estimated about 20,000 people inside the city portion of the Cove corridor and 30,000 to 40,000 once nearby county neighborhoods are counted. That density, he said, is why a closer emergency option has become a priority.

Hospital officials also tied the pair of freestanding departments to a wider Madison County buildout that includes Madison Hospital’s emergency expansion and the Madison Street Tower project downtown, which adds beds and critical-care capacity.
