Huntsville’s U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum Set for $9.98 Million Expansion

The U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum in Huntsville, Alabama, is set to undergo a significant expansion that will enhance its offerings and space. The expansion project will add 36,200 square feet to the existing facility, which currently houses a primarily aviation collection.

A notice to proceed for the project went into effect on Monday, and Chorba Contracting Corporation has been awarded the contract as the general contractor. The estimated cost of construction is $9.98 million, with a construction timeline of 480 days. This ambitious project will be located at 2065 Steve Hettinger Drive SW in John Hunt Park.

To accommodate the new building, the museum plans to rearrange its collections, allowing for the display of 12 additional artifacts that are currently in storage due to space limitations. Among these artifacts is a restored World War I “Liberty Truck”, which is presently housed elsewhere. Another notable piece, an 1879 French train boxcar, which was the first artifact brought to the museum before its opening on Veterans Day in 2001, will also be moved into the new structure for a World War I display.

The expansion aims to incorporate displays from the Revolutionary War forward. Planned exhibits include a Huey helicopter commemorating the Vietnam War and a “MASH” Korean War helicopter featured in a diorama for the Korean War. Additionally, a Vietnam-era patrol boat, currently stored outside, is also intended for display in the new facility.

The new building will consist of a pre-engineered metal structure with prefinished insulated panels. Inside, visitors can expect new facilities, including a reception area, offices, a conference room, a gift shop, restrooms, and various utility rooms. Furthermore, the existing facility will undergo limited renovations, which include reroofing and repairs.

Approval for the project has been granted by the Huntsville Planning Commission, with Mayor Tommy Battle authorized to enter into a fixed price agreement with Chorba Contracting. This project has been in conceptual discussions for over 20 years, finally moving towards development.

The expected opening for the expanded museum is projected for Spring 2027. The architectural plans are being designed by Jeffrey Alpha, which includes collaboration with multiple engineering and architectural firms.

The expansion seeks to enhance the cultural and educational resources of the museum, emphasizing the significant contributions of veterans and military families to the nation.
