Growing up under the loving guidance of his parents, Charlotte and Powell Parks, Gary developed a passion for music that would shape the rest of his life. He graduated from the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and went on to hone his talent at Boston University, where he studied Oboe Performance and met the love of his life, Janet S. Hollows, in 1966.
His commitment to music education only deepened after his wedding, during which he became a Fellowship Student at the acclaimed Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood. His journey took a patriotic turn when he served in the United States Air Force, bringing his skills to life as an oboist in the Air Force Band of Washington, D.C.. His time in the military took him on tours across Europe and South America, helping him grow as a musician and a conductor.

After four fulfilling years in the Air Force, Gary relocated to New York, where he earned a master’s degree in Conducting and Oboe Performance from Ithaca College. His impressive repertoire included conducting various symphonic, chamber orchestras, operas, and youth orchestras. In Jacksonville, FL, he was an integral part of the Jacksonville Symphony as an oboist and English horn player while also leading the Greater Jacksonville Youth Symphony and teaching strings in Duval County schools. In 1980, Huntsville welcomed Gary with open arms, where he continued his legacy by conducting the Huntsville Youth Orchestras, Decatur Chamber Orchestra, Huntsville Opera Theater, and the Shoals Symphony.
