Bill lived a remarkable life over his 92 years, filled with love, service, and dedication. He shared 67 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Mavis Morris, surrounded by a supportive family and cherished friends. Known for his confidence and humility, Bill was a man whose reserved nature spoke volumes of his character. He was a true example of a servant leader, always putting others before himself.
From Backroads to the Skies
Bill’s journey began in the picturesque town of West Monroe along the banks of the Ouachita River, where he grew up in an unassuming neighborhood. As a young man navigating life’s challenges, Bill drove his trusty Model-A Ford while attending Auburn University. He faced countless issues on the road, including the blinding headlights of oncoming cars. Yet, in true Bill fashion, he turned to solutions; he once proposed to local government officials that an additional white line be added on the pavement for safety. However, his commitment to completing his Aeronautical Engineering degree took precedence.
Upon graduating, he earned his commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy and dove headfirst into his passion for flying. Bill succeeded in completing flight training and soared high with the prestigious Navy Pilot’s wings of gold awarded to him in September 1955. His first assignment was as a Flight Instructor in the Navy, where he dedicated two years to training aspiring pilots.
A Love Story Born in Florida
It was during his service in Milton, Florida, that Bill met the love of his life, Mavis, on a blind date. Their connection blossomed into a deep love, leading to a beautiful marriage. Soon after, Bill served aboard the USS RANGER (CV-61) as a Special Weapons Delivery Pilot, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to duty and country.
A Stellar Career Unfolds
In 1959, Bill transitioned into the Navy Reserves and joined the Boeing Company as a test pilot and flight test engineer, spearheading projects involving the Bomarc Missile program at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. His skill took him briefly to Seattle, where he served as a test pilot and flight instructor for the Boeing 707. By 1962, he landed in Huntsville, Alabama, playing a crucial role in the SATURN V Moon Rocket program.
Bill’s career flourished as he contributed to various defense and aerospace projects, including the SRAM Missile and the FB-111 supersonic fighter/bomber. His passion for aviation and technology led him back to Seattle in 1972, working on the Minuteman Missile program and supporting the Navy’s E-6 Submarine Communications Relay aircraft.
A Legacy to Remember
His dedication culminated in a distinguished 26-year military career, where Bill rose to the rank of Captain (O-6) in the Navy Reserves. After retiring from Boeing following 33 years of service, he left behind a legacy filled with significant contributions to both military and civilian aviation.
Bill is survived by his loving wife Mavis, their sons Randy and John, and their families, which include seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He touched the lives of many throughout his remarkable journey.
