Tragic Loss in Meridianville as Beloved Gloria League Passes at 92

Meridianville, AL – The community is mourning the heart-wrenching loss of Gloria League who passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on January 17, 2025. Gloria, a vibrant soul with a rich and inspiring life story, was 92 years old.

A Glimpse into Gloria’s Life

Born February 7, 1932, in Pontypridd, Wales, Gloria was the youngest child of Jack and Florence (Wilcox) Jefferies. Her early childhood was marked by significant challenges, especially during the turmoil of World War II. In a heart-wrenching turn, Gloria and her siblings were separated for their safety as her family relocated to England.

Gloria found her footing again while working at Nestle’s in England, where she enjoyed the perks of free chocolates—needless to say, her coworkers fondly remembered her sweet tooth!

Finding Love Across the Ocean

It was at a social dance where Gloria met her husband, Therman (nicknamed “Red”) League. Their love blossomed, leading to a long boat journey to the United States. While the adventure was exciting, Gloria faced a challenging trip as she grew seasick during the crossing!

Once on U.S. soil, Gloria and Therman wasted no time, getting married shortly after her arrival. Together, they carved out a life filled with excitement, including travels around the globe while Therman served in the United States Air Force.

A Life Rich in Friendships and Hobbies

Known for her warm and sociable nature, Gloria was a beloved friend in her community. She became part of a British group in Huntsville, AL, where she forged friendships with delightful women like Mary Kilpatrick and Pam Bucey.

Gloria was passionate about numerous activities—she loved playing golf, hitting the beach, and indulging in her favorite British foods, such as fish and chips, Cadbury’s chocolates, and sausage rolls. Family adventures to “The Taste of Britain” and “The British Shoppe” became cherished rituals with her daughter Sharon and son Steven.

Creative Spirit and Family Values

With a heart full of creativity, Gloria had a passion for music and often enjoyed karaoke with her friend Kitty McBryar. Dancing, gardening, knitting, and crochet were just a few of her beloved pastimes. She found joy in preparing delicious holiday meals for her family, often while watching the birds from her kitchen window.

Gloria’s love for family was immeasurable. She cherished time spent with her grandchildren and embraced adventurous experiences, such as a memorable cave trip encouraged by her daughter.

Final Days and Legacy

In her later years, Gloria faced the challenges brought on by dementia. Thankfully, her children—the lifeblood of her existence—stood by her side, allowing her to stay in the comforting embrace of home. In her final months, she relished socializing at Gracefully Aging in Hazel Green.

The legacy Gloria leaves is a heartwarming tapestry woven from love, friendship, and familial bonds. She is survived by her son Clyde Jefferies, daughter Sharon Warfield, son Steven (Cindy) League, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren who adore her. Additionally, her sister Olga Searle in England and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins will carry her spirit forward.

Celebration of Life

The family invites everyone to honor Gloria’s memory during a Celebration of Life on Monday, January 20, 2025, from 1-3 p.m. at Hazel Green Funeral Home in Hazel Green, AL. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Research Hospital are suggested, a cause close to Gloria’s heart.

The family extends warm gratitude to Dr. Jack for his dedicated care and to all who brought joy to Gloria’s life. As her children reflect on the countless memories, they know their mother has joined her heavenly family, welcomed with open arms.
