Huntsville Housing Authority Implements Curfew Due to Violence

Empty outdoor areas at the LR Patton complex during curfew hours

News Summary

In response to a recent surge in violence, including two fatal shootings, the Huntsville Housing Authority has enacted a curfew at the LR Patton complex. Set to begin on June 2 and last until September 30, the curfew restricts outdoor gatherings during specified hours. Exceptions will be made for emergencies and work obligations. HHA Director Antonio McGinnis emphasizes community safety as the top priority, and the authority is working alongside local police to enforce this measure. Feedback from residents has been mostly positive, reflecting a desire for increased security.

Huntsville – The Huntsville Housing Authority (HHA) has enacted a curfew at the LR Patton complex following a spike in violence, including two recent fatal shootings. The curfew will take effect on June 2, 2025, and is scheduled to remain in place until September 30, 2025.

The specified curfew hours are from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. This regulation will apply to all outdoor areas within the premises, which include porches, balconies, walkways, stairwells, courtyards, parking lots, and other common areas. During curfew hours, residents are allowed to enter or exit their individual units but are prohibited from gathering in any outdoor location unless a valid exception applies.

Exceptions to the curfew include scenarios such as work-related obligations and emergency situations. The decision to implement this curfew emerged from two tragic incidents of gun violence that took place in May. Alexander Dominique Dennis Sr., aged 34, was shot and killed on May 25, and five days later, Tyrek Keshun Norris, aged 21, was also fatally shot. These violent events created concern within the community and prompted HHA to take action.

In addition to the shootings, another incident involving children occurred shortly after a successful HHA event designed to connect residents with local service providers. In this situation, two children were injured from gunfire after they encountered a firearm in a nearby neighborhood. In light of these events, the HHA has taken measures to enhance safety in the LR Patton complex.

HHA Director Antonio McGinnis emphasized that ensuring the safety and well-being of residents is the agency’s top priority. According to McGinnis, addressing violence and improving the overall safety across the community is imperative. Early reports suggest that the introduction of the curfew has led to quieter properties, increased feelings of safety among residents, and a reduction in disturbances.

The Huntsville Police Department is collaborating with HHA to enforce the curfew. Residents should be aware that violations of the curfew could lead to criminal trespass charges, financial penalties, or even lease termination for repeated offenses. This strict enforcement aims to mitigate further violence within the community and foster a safer living environment.

The Huntsville Housing Authority serves around 3,000 households throughout the city and has been responsive to the residents’ feedback regarding the curfew. While the housing authority has not provided specific information on the conditions that might result in the lifting of the curfew, McGinnis has initiated town hall meetings to address residents’ concerns and insights related to the recent measures. The community’s overall feedback has reportedly been positive, reflecting a collective desire for enhanced security and peace.

As the curfew is implemented, stakeholders within the Huntsville Housing Authority remain committed to open communication with residents and proactive strategies to combat violence. The authority’s leadership and the local law enforcement team are continuously evaluating the situation, striving to make informed decisions that prioritize resident safety.
