Huntsville City Council Approves $44.6 Million Expansion of Ice Sports Center to Double Facility Size
The Huntsville City Council has approved a construction contract worth $44.6 million with ARCO/Murray National Holdings, Inc. for the significant expansion of the Huntsville Ice Sports Center. This project aims to double the size of the facility, adding 118,822 square feet to the existing 83,934 square feet.
Once completed, the expanded facility will include a new ice arena with seating for 1,254 spectators, a second sheet of ice that features five curling lanes, as well as improved locker rooms for both men and women. Additionally, the expansion will provide ADA-compliant elevators and seating, along with enhanced common areas, concessions, and support spaces.
Construction is anticipated to conclude by late 2026 or early 2027. The Ice Sports Center, located at 3185 Leeman Ferry Road, is expected to become a hub for ice sports activities in the region. Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle underlined the expansion’s importance for community recreation and organized ice sports.
The expansion is projected to allow Huntsville to effectively accommodate tours, competitions, and other related events, thereby enhancing the city’s capacity to host diverse sporting activities. The Executive Director of the Ice Sports Center, Editha Dotson-Bowser, stated that the facility is expected to address ice needs 350 days a year, significantly increasing the center’s economic impact.
Prior to the construction contract approval, the city awarded a $1.6 million contract to ArcSpace Studio for the design work of the facility. ARCO/Murray, recognized as the top commercial builder in the Huntsville area for the last two years, is also engaged with several other high-profile developments within the city.
Importantly, the construction phase will ensure that the Ice Sports Center remains operational during the expansion. The project faced initial delays primarily due to rising construction costs; however, ARCO/Murray successfully negotiated the original bid down from approximately $49.5 million to the current $44.6 million.
Huntsville City Administrator John Hamilton mentioned that the city faced constraints in how much costs could be reduced following the first bid. The expansion seeks to effectively manage the growing demand for ice sports participation, addressing the challenges presented by capacity constraints that have resulted in patrons being turned away from the facility.
Beyond its primary functions, the new facility will feature dedicated areas for competitions and special events, promoting the growth of ice sports within the region. District 1 council member Michelle Watkins raised relevant considerations regarding the potential need for future basketball facilities in the city, indicating continued attention to sports infrastructure development in Huntsville.
The Huntsville City Council’s decision marks a pivotal development in the city’s efforts to bolster its recreational offerings and cater to the increasing popularity of ice sports among residents and visitors alike.
