Recent health inspections in Madison County have revealed alarming food safety scores for several local establishments. Huntsville Hospital’s main kitchen and Tellini’s both scored a troubling 76 due to significant violations, including improper food storage and equipment issues. Other restaurants, like Stoney River Steakhouse and Big Bad Breakfast, also faced violations, underscoring the need for improved food safety practices. While six establishments achieved perfect scores, many are still struggling to meet health regulations, highlighting the importance of vigilance in food safety protocols within the county.

Madison County health inspectors have released the latest food safety scores and violations for local establishments, revealing some concerning findings. Several facilities received low scores during inspections conducted from May 27 to May 30, 2025, raising alarms about food safety practices in the county.

The most notable low scores were recorded at Huntsville Hospital’s main campus kitchen and Tellini’s on Perimeter Parkway, both scoring a disconcerting 76. Huntsville Hospital’s kitchen was flagged for several significant violations. Inspectors noted that the dishwashing sink did not reach the required temperature for effective sanitization. Additionally, black residue was discovered in the ice chute, and improper temperature control was identified for melons and salads. The kitchen staff failed to produce a written copy of a specific food safety procedure, further compounding the issues.

Tellini’s also encountered serious violations, including the presence of two-week-old steak and week-old sausage that were past their discard dates. They were cited for using a rusted pan and a chipped spatula, while residue was found in the ice machine. The establishment also faced multiple food temperature problems, including dented cans in storage.

Stoney River Steakhouse located in Clift Farm received a score of 80 due to several issues, including an unlabeled bottle in the kitchen, residue found in a bar nozzle, and a lack of sanitizer in the three-compartment sink. Multiple food temperature violations were also noted during the inspection.

Other restaurants received scores ranging from 83 to 84 but still recorded violations. Big Bad Breakfast on Highway 72 scored 83, with residues identified on a bar nozzle and an employee reportedly washing bottles in the hand washing sink. Moe’s Original Bar-B-Que in Providence Main scored 84 for serving baked beans at incorrect temperatures and having damaged food contact surfaces. Similarly, Schlotzsky’s on Wall Triana scored 84 for allowing an employee to handle bread with bare hands and for several food temperature violations. The Marathon mini-mart on Highway 72 also recorded a score of 84, noting black residue in the ice machine and blocked sinks. A pre-packaged chicken sandwich with green residue was found in the reach-in cooler, alarming health inspectors.

In contrasting reports, Colbert County reported no significant food safety issues during inspections. La Esperanza Bakery in DeKalb County had its share of problems, receiving a score of 83 due to grease accumulation on the grounds outside, improper handwashing sink usage, and the presence of ants and flies in the premises.

Franklin, Lauderdale, and Limestone Counties did not report any notable issues during their inspections. The Burger King located at Highway 31 and Vaughn Bridge Road in Morgan County also fell short, achieving a score of 76 due to mold found in the ice machine, lack of paper towels at the handwashing sink, and the disposal of chicken nuggets due to temperature discrepancies.

On a positive note, six establishments achieved perfect scores of 100, highlighting their compliance with food safety and hygiene regulations. Among these were FigBrew LLC and Pourhouse HSV LLC, demonstrating that while some locations struggle, others maintain high standards in food safety.

This latest round of inspections emphasizes the importance of maintaining food safety standards in all food service establishments within Madison County. The scores, measured on a 100-point scale, reflect each facility’s adherence to health regulations designed to protect public health.
