HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Alabama A&M started its men’s basketball season Monday night in Huntsville with a lopsided home win at the AAMU Event Center, beating Oakwood 90-57 by a 33-point margin.
The Bulldogs took control early. They led 46-22 at halftime and matched that pace after the break, adding 44 more points in the second half to Oakwood’s 35.
Two Bulldogs shared the scoring lead. Jalen Carruth put up 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting and hit two of his eight tries from deep. Sami Pissis matched him with 15, making five of 12 shots from the floor and four of his five free throws.
Diovion Famakinde did most of his damage at the stripe. He made eight of 11 foul shots and finished with 14 points, even though he missed all three of his 3-point attempts.
The A&M bench was a big part of the gap. Devin Brown came on to post a double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down 11 rebounds in 17 minutes. Stephaun Walker added 11 points and nine boards as a starter. The Bulldogs held a 37-7 edge in bench points, outscored Oakwood 50-18 in the paint and won the rebounding battle 51-31.
Oakwood was led by Elijah Caine, who posted 20 points to go with nine rebounds and a pair of steals. Chase Jackson gave the Ambassadors 14 points and four assists, and Jordan Green chipped in nine. Oakwood shot 21 of 63 from the field for the night.
Both teams are back on the floor this week. Oakwood travels to Tennessee State on Wednesday, while Alabama A&M stays home to face Mississippi University for Women on Friday.
