HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Huntsville police opened the Public Safety Training Academy on Saturday so people thinking about joining the force, and their families, could see work that goes well beyond street patrol.

The session, billed as Inside HPD: Career Opportunities, began at 9 a.m. at 5365 Triana Blvd. SW. Recruiter James Pratt said the department wanted visitors to meet officers, watch how they work, and leave with a clearer sense of whether the job fits them.

City officials described the gathering as a first of its kind. Guests could look over gear used by SWAT, the crisis negotiation team, the bomb unit, including its robots, and the K-9 unit. There were also impaired-driving displays and instructors on the driving pad.

Capt. Tony McElyea said people who like technology can train as guardian network operators in intelligence and the NAMACC, while people drawn to animals can try K-9 work. Sgt. Chris Jackson said Huntsville residents generally back the department and that officers keep working to earn that trust.

Pratt said the agency is hunting for people who will help both the department and the public, not simply fill seats. HPD now lists 92 openings, 33 of them added over the past three years as the city grew, and officials said they would rather hire fewer strong candidates than move weak ones through training.

Starting pay is more than 59,000 dollars, with four 10-hour days each week plus paid holidays, vacation and sick time. The academy itself lasts 19 weeks, and Pratt said it usually takes about three months after the physical test before someone learns whether they have the job. Training does not stop at graduation, he said, because tactics and criminal law have to be kept fresh.

Applications for the 77th Academy Session close at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 12, 2027. Pratt said people from many backgrounds may be a match and urged anyone curious to come ask questions.
