HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Huntsville job seekers with engineering or computer skills are looking at the most concentrated tech hiring market in the country, according to new figures from the job platform JobLeads.
Engineering and IT roles accounted for 38% of new Huntsville job postings from April through June, the top share among the 67 U.S. cities JobLeads follows. Boise, Idaho, was a distant second at 26.5%. Engineering made up 20.1% of Huntsville postings and IT 18%, and the city ranked first in each field on its own.
That added up to 6,943 engineering listings and 6,224 IT listings in the quarter. Nashville, with more than twice as many total postings, still trailed Huntsville in both fields. Engineering openings rose 12% from the first quarter and IT openings climbed 4.8%.
Hiring across all industries grew as well. JobLeads counted 34,579 new Huntsville postings in the second quarter, a 9.2% jump from 31,671 in the first three months of the year.
Remote work is scarce. Just 6.2% of Huntsville listings in the first quarter offered fully remote work, below Nashville at 10.6% and Atlanta at 11%, and 88% required workers on-site full time. JobLeads notes its index counts postings, not people hired.
The posting numbers line up with the wider local economy. The Huntsville/Madison County Chamber’s second-quarter market report puts metro unemployment at a low 2.9% and says area job growth is outpacing the nation, led by Manufacturing, Professional and Business Services, and Government. The same report says population and employment are still rising, but at a slower 1.5% to 2.5% clip than the 3% to 3.5% pace of the last five years.
