HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Alabama A&M football is nationally ranked. The Huntsville school moved into the AFCA FCS Coaches Top 25 at No. 24 when Monday’s poll came out, and it kept the top spot among HBCU programs for a second week.
The Bulldogs picked up 52 points from the coaches. They had been getting votes in both national polls for two weeks before breaking in, a run that started after the Homecoming win over Grambling State on Oct. 17. A&M is still just outside the Stats Perform FCS Top 25, where it again received votes.
In the Black College Football Poll, A&M drew 13 first-place votes and 454 points, 24 points clear of South Carolina State at 430. Jackson State sits third, with Alcorn State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff next. A&M first reached No. 1 in that poll on Oct. 26. The poll is run jointly by the MEAC, SWAC, CIAA and SIAC.
The rankings followed Saturday’s three-point win over Alabama State at Legion Field, the 85th edition of the Magic City Classic. The result broke a four-game skid against the Hornets, moved A&M to 7-2 and 4-1 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, and gave head coach Sam Shade the 50th win of his career.
Quarterback Cornelious Brown IV was the offensive MVP after throwing for 216 yards and two touchdowns on 22-of-35 passing and running for another score. Linebacker DJ Barber earned defensive MVP with 13 tackles, and the offense piled up 420 yards.
Next up is a road test at Prairie View A&M, the defending SWAC champion. Kickoff at Panther Stadium is set for 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7.
