HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The UAH Chargers closed their home-opening hockey weekend Saturday in Huntsville with a 7-2 win over Austin Peay, playing in pink jerseys that were auctioned off after the final horn to raise money for the Liz Hurley Ribbon Run.
The special sweaters were part of a fundraiser tied to the Huntsville breast cancer run. The run itself took place a week earlier, but the Chargers kept the pink theme going for both games of the weekend series against the Governors, Friday night’s home opener and Saturday’s rematch.
The series opened the Chargers’ season on Friday with a late 9:30 p.m. start, with the puck dropping at the Huntsville Ice Sports Center on the city’s home ice. Hurley, a local TV news anchor, dropped the ceremonial first puck before the opening faceoff, giving the night a personal link to the cause.
The program asked fans to show up in pink for breast cancer awareness, and shirts were on sale at the rink for anyone who arrived without one. Part of the money from those sales goes to help breast cancer patients in the Huntsville area.
Saturday’s lopsided result gave the Chargers a winning finish to a weekend built as much around the community as around the scoreboard. The jersey auction after the game turned the uniforms the players wore into another donation to the cause.
The University of Alabama in Huntsville program uses the Ice Sports Center as its home ice, and the two-game set doubled as the first chance for local fans to see this season’s roster in person, with the pink theme carried from the first faceoff Friday to the auction Saturday.
