HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Huntsville’s Alabama A&M now sits atop HBCU football at the FCS level. A week after sitting second, the Bulldogs took over the top spot when the newest Black College Football Poll came out Monday.
Alabama A&M collected 430 points and 12 first-place votes. South Carolina State, with 10 first-place votes, sat second at 420 points, just 10 behind.
Bethune-Cookman made the biggest jump in the top three, climbing from eighth to third with 326 points. Jackson State, last week’s leader, slid to fourth at 318. Morgan State is fifth, followed by Grambling State, Alabama State, Prairie View A&M, Howard and Alcorn State. Howard and Alcorn State are new to the top 10.
The ranking caps a 6-2 start. Alabama A&M dropped its opener to Howard 31-24 in Atlanta, then won five straight, including a 40-21 victory at Florida A&M. Its only other loss came 31-28 to Jackson State in Mobile on Oct. 3. Since then the Bulldogs have rolled at Louis Crews Stadium, beating Bethune-Cookman 55-17 and Grambling State 61-31.
Next up is the Magic City Classic against rival Alabama State on Saturday, Oct. 31, at Legion Field in Birmingham, with kickoff at 2:30 p.m. The Bulldogs then travel to Prairie View A&M on Nov. 7 before Senior Day against Texas Southern at home on Nov. 14.
SWAC schools fill seven of the 10 spots in the top 10, and the Bulldogs, Huntsville’s only Division I program, lead them all. The MEAC, SWAC, CIAA and SIAC jointly sanction the poll, which ranks HBCU programs in the FCS and Division II.
