Madison County, Alabama – A tornado struck Madison County on Tuesday evening, causing damage primarily to the Redstone Arsenal, where it impacted a structure near the NASA area. The tornado touched down at approximately 7 p.m., following severe weather that was not accurately predicted for certain parts of north Alabama. It was reported that this tornado was the second to pass over Redstone Arsenal that night. Fortunately, there were no significant damage reports recorded elsewhere in Madison County.

The National Weather Service confirmed that the tornado was classified as an EF-2, with winds reaching up to 125 mph. It had a path length of 13 miles, moving from Limestone County into Madison County. The storm led to numerous uprooted trees and minor damage to several homes in the area. Notably, two homes near Hughes Road suffered major roof damage due to the tornado’s high winds. Additional tree damage was reported along multiple roadways, although the tornado likely dissipated before reaching Slaughter Road.

By 8:40 p.m., tornado warnings for Madison County were canceled, but severe storms were expected to continue into the night for both northern and southern Alabama. A Tornado Warning had been issued earlier for southern Madison County and eastern Morgan County, effective until 9 p.m. Just before 8:37 p.m., meteorologists indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was moving northeast at a speed of 15 mph, located near Owens Cross Roads. The warning advised that flying debris could be dangerous for those without adequate shelter, emphasizing the risk to mobile homes, which could be significantly damaged or destroyed.

The affected areas included Redstone Arsenal, Owens Cross Roads, and Huntsville around 8:40 p.m., as well as Ryland, Hampton Cove, Farley, Whitesburg, and Brownsboro. Residents were urged to take immediate cover in basements or interior rooms on the lowest floor of sturdy buildings. Individuals outdoors, those in mobile homes, or who were in vehicles were advised to seek substantial shelter to protect against potential flying debris.

In addition, a separate tornado touched down in the Killingsworth Cove area, where a mobile home was destroyed. Fortunately, the family residing there had evacuated to a community shelter prior to the storm’s arrival. Various other tornado tracks were identified in surrounding counties, such as Jackson, Limestone, and Colbert, alongside accompanying damage reports from these locations.

As of now, emergency services and meteorology teams continue to conduct storm surveys to assess the damage related to this series of severe weather events. The heavy rainfall that accompanied the storms may have obscured the visibility of the tornado, contributing to the surprise nature of its landing.

Residents are reminded to remain vigilant and prepared for potential future storms, keeping safety measures and shelters readily available as further assessments and monitoring of the weather patterns are undertaken.
